  3 Aug 1860 - The value of his personal estate was $1,000 at this time (source: National Archives and Records Administration, 1860 United States Census, Santa Clara, Santa Clara County, California, National Archives Microfilm Roll M653_65, Ancestry.com. 1860 United States Federal Census [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: Ancestry.com Operations, Inc., 2009) Three other men named William Campbell were identified with the early history of the county. The first of these was the William Campbell who came to Muhlenberg about 1805, lived on the northwest corner of Main and Main Cross streets, and moved to Nashville about 1820. His daughter, Cynthia Campbell, married Samuel Campbell, son of Colonel William Campbell. They had no children. The second was the William Campbell who, with his brothers David and Charles, located west of Greenville about 1805. He moved to Illinois about 1835. The third William Campbell was a son of the above-mentioned David Campbell. He married a daughter of Benjamin Hancock, and about 1860 moved to California. Another of the sons of David Campbell was John Campbell, who was a tanner in Greenville for many years. source: Rothert, Otto A. A History of Muhlenberg County, Kentucky. Louisville, KY: John P. I will begin at mother's side, as she was one generation older than father's. "Mother's grandfather came to America in 1704 from Scotland. I think there were three of them. I know but little of any of them. Only a few of them have I heard spoken of. John B. Campbell, from one branch of the family, formerly lived in Hopkinsville, Kentucky was a colonel and was killed in the War of 1812. " … Grandfather had one brother and two sisters. His brother, David went to North Carolina and helped to build Campbell’s Station. Grandfather’s sisters, Molly Morrison and Molly Allison and Uncle Morrison came to Kentucky before grandfather and assisted in building the fort where Lexington now stands in Kentucky. I do not recollect the date of building the fort, although I have heard Uncle Morrison often speak of it in connection with the early settlements in Kentucky. … Of grandfather’s family, father was the oldest. He was born in October 1772. Mother was born October 1774.
